Fundamental in Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) and database researchers understand the importance of developing systems with access to large information bases. In AI, such information bases are called “knowledge bases” on the assumption they contain information about something. Database researchers simply call these information bases “databases”, viewing them as large complex data structures that allow efficient storage and retrieval. This chapter looks at decision-making and problem-solving processes. As part of this discussion, it explores the concept of business intelligence. This is an incredibly broad category, but it plays a central role in modern business. Business intelligence begins with data collection and storage. Then it incorporates any activity, tool, or process needed to extract actionable information and make decisions based on that information. AI systems are already being deployed in many contexts to perform work and make decisions that humans used to make. Therefore, this chapter covers and analyses the database and knowledge base in decision support systems as well as the inference mechanisms in AI: deductive, inductive, adductive, and case-based reasoning. AI and software engineering are other topics covered in this chapter. These disciplines have many commonalities. Both deal with modelling objects from the real world, such as business processes, expert knowledge, or process models.
