A-C: An NDN-based Blockchain Network With Erasure Coding

Ruiran Wang, Laurent Njilla, Shucheng Yu · 2023

In blockchain systems timely dissemination of transactions and blocks to the network is not only critical for consensus but also closely related to the system efficiency and security. Flooding-based gossip protocols, as adopted in mainstream blockchain systems, can offer low latency and reliability but at the cost of communication redundancy. In this paper we present a new data dissemination protocol, namely A-C, based on the named data networking (NDN) technique. A-C integrates erasure coding (EC) in a two-layer NDN-based publication-subscription mechanism for fast data dissemination and bandwidth efficiency. To further reduce data redundancy, we introduce a new interrupt response mechanism which probabilistically terminates data forwarding at receiving nodes to suppress the dissemination of excessive data blocks. Simulation shows that A-C reduces data redundancies by up to 28.9% as compared to the state-of-the-art NDN-based solution at a comparable level of latency. Compared with the gossip protocol, A-C reduces up to 58.7% redundancies and 15% latency.
