This study introduces a modified radix-16 CORDIC (R16CORDIC) algorithm-based direct digital frequency synthesizer (DDFS). The standard approach to realizing DDFS is to use the ROM-based look-up table (LUT). However, the problem with this approach is that it requires a large memory to store the sine and cosine values with good accuracy. A modification in the R16CORDIC algorithm is proposed to achieve less latency and resource utilization. The sine and cosine can be calculated using a modified R16CORDIC algorithm in $\displaystyle \frac{N}{2}$+2 iterations as opposed to N iterations using the conventional CORDIC technique for N-bit precision. Additionally, the input to DDFS is pre-determined and known in advance. Using this data, the hardware needed to correct the scale factor of the first iteration of R16CORDIC can be minimized.
