Regression testing is an activity in testing that provides confidence when changes are being made in existing systems that the behavior of the system is not being harmed because of these changes. The main purpose of regression testing is to make sure that changes made in the system such as modification of existing features have not affected other features of the system that are not changed. Regression testing is performed by running a test case after the changes have been applied to the system. It is done by running all or some test cases that previously have been made to test the system. Test suites grow in size as software grows, and it becomes too costly to run or execute all test suites. Minimization of test suites allows for eliminating redundant test cases so that number of tests that are to be run will be reduced. On current search and practice on regression testing the paper tries to do a survey that finds out the gaps between these. This paper aims to conduct a survey on regression testing and identify the gaps in current research and practice. The paper aims to gather information on the current state-of-the-art techniques and tools used for regression testing, the challenges faced during regression testing, and the current trends and future directions in regression testing.
