Dynamic Routing Mechanism to Reduce Energy Consumption in a Software-Defined Network

Florance G Viji · 2023

Increase in traffic over networks by a huge number of packets and managing the network is a challenging problem of many organizations, which leads to high energy consumption on network devices. In this chapter, we address the importance of reducing energy consumption in an organizational network that includes both wired and wireless network devices. The emergence of the software-defined network (SDN) architecture implemented in an OpenFlow environment has brought a solution to this problem. The goal of SDN is to centralize control of networked devices to reduce energy consumption by providing the shortest-path routing mechanism. The aim of this chapter is to calculate the dynamic link capacity on an SDN and dynamically route user traffic in order to reduce overall energy consumption by using SDN controllers in the networking environment. The simulation was made in the Mininet emulation environment based on the POX controller.
