What considerations help us in writing brief, clear, effective, and precise responses in words to scientific questions? Some scientific questions are readily answered with numbers. Others, however, require explanations in words. Short essays explaining a process or a phenomenon, or providing an update on recent research results will draw on your ability as a writer. Students coming out of high school with aspirations to work in the sciences may not appreciate fully at that stage the need for a reliable use of language in the sciences – the value of the poetic in natural philosophy. We talk in this chapter about equations as sentences in symbols, and we offer a few suggestions for writing short answers in words.
