Future Directions in SDLMI Practice
Karrie A. Shogren, Sheida K. Raley · 2023
Self-determination has positive impacts for all students. Yet, there is still more to be done to improve how self-determination instruction is supported across contexts and for students who experience marginalization. This chapter highlights future directions that can advance equity in the implementation of the SDLMI. We highlight ways to engage people with disabilities as leaders and SDLMI implementers to elevate their lived experiences and build community. We also discuss ways to support the scaling up of the SDLMI, enhance home–school–community connections, and ensure the SDLMI is delivered in culturally responsive and sustaining ways. Future directions for the SDLMI and self-determination research and practice are described along with ways that teachers can act as advocates and change agents, bringing evidence-based practices designed to enhance self-determination, like the SDLMI, to schools and communities.
