Machine learning, deep learning, text mining, and computer vision in Africa

Susan Iris Brokensha, Eduan Kotzé, Burgert Senekal · 2023

This chapter interrogates four technologies currently making inroads in Africa, namely, machine learning, deep learning, text mining, and computer vision. Although these technologies may be used for social good, they pose threats to the continent if not properly regulated through carefully considered policymaking mechanisms. The chapter considers how machine learning, deep learning, text mining, and computer vision have become technologies in Africa that are being designed and deployed with the aim of contributing towards solving countries’ socio-economic challenges. At the same time, the chapter offers the caveat that while these technologies may be used for good, they also have the potential for ill.
