Approaches to Project Management – Academic Discussions vs. Real Life

It is a common belief that a management methodology or method is a magic recipe for most problems that can come up during the project. Thus, we have various standards, recommendations, certification organizations such as the PMI, PRINCE2, Scrum, SAFe, etc. Some of them are considered complicated and obsolete, whereas others are thought to be trendy, more effective, and modern. There are entire businesses created around them; their activity includes inventing new versions of recommendations or standards, sales of educational materials, certifications, creating consulting positions, or company transformations. All this contributes to a certain type of trend, a pressure to apply these particular management techniques. As a result, most of the people beginning their project management career think that obtaining a certificate in a certain method or standard is a proof that you have the skills necessary to manage complex projects and is a formal piece of evidence about your experience and even guarantees success. It is also commonly believed that if a project failed or is delayed, the reason for that must be that the “holy principles” of a given management technique had not been adhered to.
