Your phones, tablets or PCs may trick you to think that our entire world is connected. But the truth is only about 5% of our physical world is connected. In 2019, there were approximately 250 million devices in India which are expected to be 2 billion by 2021. The graph is increasing exponentially. Companies and cities wish to utilize this for ensuring the safety of the citizens and by launching new products by using two amazing new technologies Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning (ML). Cities and municipalities have installed cameras and sensors for ensuring the safety of the citizens, but our computer systems are not efficient enough to process this much data and especially video data. That is where ML comes in. ML is different from programming. In ML, we use massive data to develop programs or various ML models. Many ML models act as backbone for various IoT applications. Supervised and unsupervised ML models support various architectures of IoT applications accordingly. One of the applications of IoT and ML is vehicle platooning; this can control traffic and pollution which are two main concerns these days. This review editorial gives a glimpse of IoT and ML and its applications.
