Adopting Observability

Daniel Gomez Blanco · Apress eBooks · 2023

The initial chapters of this book focused on why observability matters in modern distributed systems and how OpenTelemetry standards help to provide the building blocks to implement a holistic approach to understand distributed systems, correlating telemetry across signals and services, breaking those silos they’ve traditionally been confined to. Each of the individual signals we’ve explored (traces, metrics, and logs) has specific characteristics that make them a better signal for a particular use case, but using them in isolation, without context, reduces their usefulness. The value of observability can only be fully realized if engineering teams take advantage of all signals, not only to instrument their services accordingly but using telemetry context within their debugging workflows to troubleshoot regressions faster.
