Auto-Instrumentation

Daniel Gomez Blanco · Apress eBooks · 2023

The API design of OpenTelemetry puts telemetry instrumentation in the hands of the most adequate person to instrument a library: the author or maintainer. Although this is a great pattern, it is not always possible to apply it, and it requires application owners to upgrade package dependencies to their instrumented releases. To stay true to its mission of providing ubiquitous telemetry out of the box, the OpenTelemetry project provides a set of packages that automatically add instrumentation for popular libraries and frameworks. In this chapter, we will explore how automatic instrumentation works and how it can be configured in an example Java application.
