Maximizing Adoption by Minimizing Friction

Interoperability has been an area of focus for the OpenTelemetry project since its conception. The pre-existing diversity of telemetry frameworks, instrumentation libraries, transport formats, and protocols meant that any adopted solution had to support easy ways to integrate new and old instrumentation to provide uniformity and standardization in telemetry pipelines. Even though OpenTelemetry Collectors can go a long way in helping to integrate legacy systems with OpenTelemetry-instrumented applications, past chapters in this book have taught us of the advantages of relying on OpenTelemetry APIs and SDKs at the instrumentation layer and standard formats and protocols like W3C TraceContext or OTLP to transport in-band and out-of-band data. At some point, which depends on external factors as well as stability of individual signals, and in order to fully benefit from OpenTelemetry features, teams and organizations should consider a gradual migration toward these open standards.
