Comprehensive Survey on the Reliability of Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) expand computation capability to physical environments that are unreachable for human beings. Environmental monitoring, military, healthcare, and rescue operations after natural disaster are specific application areas of WSN. Reliable data transmission is an important requirement of a WSN. To maintain the reliability of the WSN, the data transmitted in the network from source to destination must reach without loss and errors. In this context, this review paper examines alternative reliability strategies for WSNs, along with their benefits and drawbacks. Three levels—node, cluster head, and sink—are used to categories the overall idea of reliability. Because of the limited resources in WSNs, especially power limitations, it is always desirable to minimize the transmission of duplicate events in a WSN and only transmit the events that are needed for the application.
