Careers in Law Enforcement

A career in law enforcement can be described using dozens of adjectives, simply given the importance of the work, controversial nature of police practices, and variety of opportunities available. The various levels of law enforcement and the different positions within each provide those interested in careers in the field many opportunities for employment and professional growth. This chapter addresses the nature and types of employment positions in federal law enforcement and state- and local-level police departments. It also addresses opportunities within special jurisdiction law enforcement agencies. The hiring practices associated with law enforcement officers are relatively vigorous; thus, those interested in entering the field need to be prepared. Accordingly, the latter part of the chapter covers recruitment, selection, and training as they pertain to employment in the field.
