Disaster Recovery Architectures

“Everything fails all the time” is a famous quote by Amazon’s chief technical officer, Werner Vogels. Most AWS services have been designed for high availability, and they do rise up like a phoenix whenever a failure occurs. But what happens if the entire region or availability zone encounters an outage? In such a scenario, it would be wise to have a backup, and most distributed systems do have continuous backups. But that is just one part of making your system resilient. The bulk of the task lies in orchestrating the recovery workflow in such a way that new systems can be built immediately, with traffic being routed to the healthy systems in the event of a failure.
