A High-Speed 12-Layer Two-Dimensional Bar-Code Detection System with Balanced Raster Scanner

Hiroo Wakatmi, Hiroshi Ajiki · Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe · 1998

Two-dimensional (2D) bar-code detection systems (BCDSs) have great possibilities for use in high-speed process automation systems because they permit direct access to management information data. The conventional 2D BCDSs used to detect 2D bar codes such as Code16K and Code49, mainly use a raster scanner with a tilted axis. This scanner, however, is not sufficient for high-speed applications (such as goods management in production lines), since its speed is limited to nearly 500 scan/s at most due to low stability and low durability. This is because the center of gravity greately deviates from its central axis and the ball-bearings around it are easily worn especially in high-speed rotation.
