5G, IoT, and Cyber Risk

Sabhyata Soni · 2023

The next step in wireless technology is 5G. It promises faster speeds and more reliability for constant online devices, such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices. However, this increased connectivity also creates new cyber risks. As more and more devices connect to the Internet, the number of potential points of attack increases. A hacker could exploit a vulnerability in a 5G network or in an IoT device to gain access to sensitive data or take down critical systems. The interconnectedness of 5G networks and IoT devices makes them more vulnerable to Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. In a DDoS attack, hackers use large numbers of infected devices to flood a target with traffic, preventing it from accessing legitimate web traffic. This could potentially shut down businesses or critical infrastructure.
