Fault Tree

Paulo Romero, Martins Maciel · 2023

This chapter introduces the Fault Tree (FT) model. FT and RBD are the most widely used combinatorial models for reliability and availability evaluation. Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) was initially developed in 1962 at Bell Laboratories by H. A. Watson to evaluate the Minuteman I Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Launch Control System. It is interesting to note that specific evident points in success-oriented models concur with certain analogous points in failure-oriented models. It introduces the basic compositions used when representing a system through an FT. These basic compositions are referred to as the basic gates considered in the model, that is, AND, OR, and KooN gates. AND, OR, and KooN gates can be combined to form more complex system configurations. The chapter shows how to model common cause failures using FT.
