Message from the ProTools 2022 Workshop ChairsUnderstanding program behavior is critical to overcome the expected architectural and programming complexities that arise on modern high-performance computing (HPC) platforms, such as limited power budgets, heterogeneity, hierarchical memories, shrinking I/O bandwidths, and performance variability. In order to do so, HPC software developers need intuitive tools for debugging, performance measurement, analysis, and tuning of large-scale HPC applications. Moreover, data collected from these tools such as hardware counters, communication traces, and network traffic can be far too large and too complex to be analyzed in a straightforward manner. We need new automatic analysis and visualization approaches to help application developers intuitively understand the multiple, interdependent effects that algorithmic choices have on application correctness or performance. The Workshop on Programming and Performance Visualization Tools (ProTools) intends to bring together HPC application developers, tool developers, and researchers from the visualization, performance, and program analysis fields for an exchange of new approaches to assist developers in analyzing, understanding, and optimizing programs for extreme-scale platforms. This is the fourth edition of the ProTools workshop, which was combined out of two prior SC workshop series: the Workshop on Visual Performance Analysis (VPA) and the Workshop on Extreme-Scale Programming Tools (ESPT).Covering all aspects of HPC program and performance analysis -data collection, visualization, and tools -the combined ProTools workshop intends to attract a broader set of research communities than the individual predecessor workshops, and facilitate better interactions between these communities. The name "ProTools" reflects its main goal of providing a venue to exchange ideas and developments for the HPC tools community. After two years of virtual workshop editions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2022 edition of the ProTools workshop was ocne again held as an in-person event in conjunction with the International Conference on High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC22) in Dallas, Texas on Sunday, November 13, 2022.The workshop received five paper submissions, out of which we accepted four papers.During the review process, each paper was reviewed by at least three members of our program committee. We thank them for their hard work. The ProTools 2022 workshop was again a premier venue for sharing the latest research in HPC programming and performance visualization tools.
