The Applications of Police Computing
Gordon Fraser · 2023
In 1970 police forces made little or no use of computers. The growth of police computing technology is such that the computer will soon have as great an impact on policing as the personal radio and the patrol car. The police service has three sources of computing. First, there is the Police National Computer or the PNC, as it is generally known. The second source of police computing is the smaller, local police-dedicated computers used by individual forces to meet their own local needs. The third source of computing is the Local Authority computer. Every police force makes some use of its Local Authority machine. Two of the main functions of the police service are the prevention and detection of crime. Every police force makes some use of its Local Authority machine and there are some fifty different types of police applications being run on Local Authority computers.
