Learner Corpus Research

Shin’ichiro Ishikawa · 2023

Chapter 1 presents an introductory overview of learner corpus research (LCR), which is a rapidly growing research field at the intersection of corpus linguistics and foreign language teaching. Section 1.1 offers a historical overview of LCR. Section 1.2 introduces two influential learner corpora (ICLE and LINDSEI) as well as a variety of corpus datasets that collect data from Asian learners of English and then discusses the typology of learner corpora. Section 1.3 overviews major corpus query techniques (e.g., KWIC search, collocation search, and keyword search), contrastive interlanguage analysis (CIA) as a theoretical backbone of LCR, and a variety of statistical methods to deal with frequency obtained from corpora.
