Advances in verification and delivery techniques

This chapter is focused on several clinically valuable techniques for interfraction patient setup and intrafraction motion management during radiation delivery. We first present the widely implemented ionizing radiation image guidance systems and then elaborate the emerging technique of magnetic resonance (MR)–guided radiotherapy (MRgRT) for patient localization and positioning. We also describe nonionizing radiation motion management solutions such as surface guided radiation therapy (SGRT) and beacon-based electromagnetic tracking system. Commercialized clinical applications of each system are introduced. Quality assurance (QA) procedures and clinical workflow of these systems are discussed in fine detail.
