Development and Operation of a Hpvle Experimental Apparatus
J. David Raal, Andreas L. Mühlbauer · 2023
This chapter describes the successful HPVLE static analytic equilibrium cell, associated equipment, and operating procedures developed in the laboratories. The static analytic mode of operation was chosen since the required workload associated with the design, construction and operation of the experimental apparatus should be within the means of one researcher. One of the most troublesome problems experienced in the sampling of a volatile/nonvolatile mixture into an evacuated space is the tendency of the volatile component to flash preferentially, thus creating a nonhomogeneous mixture. Experiments on the carbon dioxide/toluene system were used to determine the optimum operational procedure for obtaining reproducible results for the liquid and vapor phases. The procedure was used essentially unaltered for the propane/water and propane/1-propanol binary systems. Achieving accurate results from a gas chromatograph requires an understanding of some of the important qualitative and quantitative aspects that can contribute to or adversely affect the accuracies achieved.
