Media, Cybercrime, Technology, and Special Situations
Wayne L. Davis, Paul J. Leslie, Ashley B. Davis · 2023
To promote safety, intelligence that involves the media, the internet, and special police situations must be considered. The media disseminate news, promotional messages, education, and other data to the general public. Because the media can influence public support, the police should have a good working relationship with the media. When a crisis event occurs, the police must have a trained public relations officer readily available to communicate with the media. The public relations officer should monitor the messages the media deliver to the public to ensure their accuracy. As the use of technology and the internet increases, people will be at greater risk of cyberspace crimes. Several ways are discussed to protect children from internet dangers. When technology is required by a police department, the department must take steps to ensure its successful implementation. During special police situations, such as hostage negotiations, bomb threats, HazMat spills, abused children, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), domestic violence, and a felony stop, collecting and assessing intelligence are essential.
