Research in brief: Eliciting grammaticality judgements of logically ambiguous sentences in a non-experimental setting
Hannah Jane Middleton · PsyPag Quarterly · 2018
This paper proposes combining the use of SNAP-judgements (Mahowald et al., 2016) and disambiguating stories for eliciting grammaticality judgements of logically ambiguous sentences. I first show that the challenge logically ambiguous sentences present is the identification of their possible interpretations. This makes them prime candidates for analysis via formal experiments. I argue that the combination of disambiguating stories and SNAP-judgements, a statistically valid method of eliciting grammaticality judgements in a non-experimental setting, provides a suitable time- and cost-efficient alternative. I support this claim with results from a SNAP-judgment task.
