The GPU Environment—Software Extensions and Custom Features

Jon Peddie · 2022

The GPU has had a remarkable growth and development history and the final chapter is not written yet, nor will it be for a long time. The GPU environment has continued as a work in process, and it too has evolved as the industry learned the limitations of current designs and tried to develop new longer lived standards. In this chapter, we trace some of those development, particularly on the hardware side. The GPU has to plug into a bus or interfaces and that interface has to be well understood, universally applied, and reliable. The GPU also must have an equally reliably and hopefully long-life output connector standard too. People buy monitors and displays and expect them to last for years, not have to be changed every time a new AIB is introduced.
