Joel Chadabe (1938–2021)

Sara Haefeli · University of Illinois Press eBooks · 2022

Haefeli describes Chadabe’s technological advances in electronic music at the time of the interview and compares and contrasts Chadabe’s thinking with Cage, with whom he worked. Childs and Chadabe discuss Chadabe’s concepts of levels in memory and process automation. They agree on problems such as process as proof of worth, serialism, masterwork culture, limitations in Schenkerian analysis, education, the obsession with historical music as opposed to historical art. They discuss the problems of notation both in instrumental and electronic composition, open and demonstrative teaching methods, and the rate of change in electronic music. Chadabe categorizes sound by waveform, and notes that Cage brought new sounds into the musical world. He believes that they were, following Meyer, at the end of the Renaissance.
