On the Interest of Hexagonal Abstraction of Maritime Information

Worldwide maritime traffic not only is expanding rapidly but also faces numerous fluctuations, sometimes downwards, due particularly to changes in socio-economic relations between countries, the recent pandemic situation, and conflicts that may affect strategic maritime areas or climate change that may, for example, affect the location of halieutic resources. The study of maritime mobilities and spaces is therefore more essential than ever. This paper discusses the relevance of hexagonal indexing to represent, analyse, and understand the latter mobilities and maritime spaces at different granularity levels. This approach is illustrated for several purposes using Uber H3 hexagons.
