Implementation attacks, like side-channel and fault attacks, are a threat to deployed devices. This is especially the case with smart cards and IoT devices, where the attacker has physical access. Consequently, these devices usually implement corresponding countermeasures. A common approach to protect an implementation against these attacks is to combine a masking scheme against side-channel attacks with a redundancy mechanism against fault attacks. While these schemes were typically thought to be robust against large classes of implementation attacks, it has been shown recently that they are not as effective against statistical ineffective fault attacks (SIFA) as expected. In particular, SIFA needs only a single fault induction per execution, and is largely unaffected by both the deployed protection order of masking and the redundancy level of the detection-based countermeasure. Therefore, the exploration of countermeasures against SIFA that do not rely on protocols or physical protection mechanisms is of great scientific interest.
