Closed Circuit Television(CCTV) camera is a widely used surveillance solution across the world. CCTV cameras are expected to function 24/7 for remote monitoring and ensuring security of the premises. One of the main challenges associated with CCTV cameras is the amount of storage required for storing the footage. Although there are solutions like secondary storages, cloud storage to name a few, they are feasible only under certain constraints like fast and stable internet connection, hard disks with large storage capacity and so on. These constraints may not always be satisfied in some regions of the world where fast and stable internet connection isn’t always available, and large storage solutions are expensive. Thus, there arises a need to optimize the footage to accommodate more data in the available physical storage space. This project proposes some methods which are capable of:1)Optimizing the functioning of a camera, i.e. whose active/idle state depends on whether motion was detected or not.2)Using Compression techniques to optimize the footage, that allows more footage to be stored in the available storage space.3)Sending the recorded video and its compressed versions through a messenger app to the owner.4)Providing comparative study of the two compression techniques employed, which describes their compression methodologies and gives an idea as to which technique may be preferred for commercial usage.
