One of the applications of smart grids is advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) networks on the basis of the internet of things (IoT). AMI is an integrated system of smart meters, communications networks, and data management systems that enables two-way communication between utilities and customers. To support these diverse applications, the IETF presented a routing protocol for low power and lossy networks (RPL). The trickle timer algorithm is one method to use control working inside RPL, which is mainly to solve the energy consumption of the network. This paper focuses on two trickle timer algorithms of RPL-based routing protocol for enhancing lifetime in AMI networks, which compares based on two parent selection mechanisms. Moreover, the result can show the consideration of trickle timer and parent selection that regards remaining energy affect to the network lifetime increasing more than considering one of trickle timer and parent selection.
