The emerging technology that binds the things around us is called the Internet of Things (IoT). Various fields, such as environmental control, home automation, healthcare, and industrial processes, use it. It has the advantage of availability of devices, which are connected through the Internet, but there are concerns about security. One of the essential tools for keeping a check on networks and information systems is intrusion detection systems (IDS). Traditional IDS techniques are difficult to apply to the IoT as it has unique characteristics like various standards, protocol stacks, limited resource devices, etc. In this chapter, we examine research activities regarding IDS for the IoT. The main objective is to come across various trends, unresolved concerns, future research opportunities, security risks, and strategies for authentication. Various characteristics used to classify the IDS, such as detection mechanisms, deployment strategies, security risks, and authentication strategies, are all important considerations. We also discuss the various options for each attribute, including details from studies that suggest various IDS schemes and methodologies for the IoT.
