Other RDS Databases

William K. Penberthy, Steve G. Roberts · Apress eBooks · 2022

For .NET developers, SQL Server is likely the most well-known of the database engines available in RDS. However, it is certainly not the only one! There are five other different relational databases where AWS offers a managed version: MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Amazon Aurora, and Oracle. There are several reasons that you may choose to use one of these other databases, whether it is because of other existing systems that use the database, such as the plethora of applications built on top of the Oracle database, or simply because the cost around the open source databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB is much less than what you would pay for an instance of SQL Server as shown in Figure 9-1.
