Understanding of Adaptive Response: A Study from Animal Systems

V. Vasudev, H. P. Gurushankara · Biodiversity · 2022

The adaptive response is an exciting phenomenon that refers to cells or an organism’s ability to resist a toxic agent’s damaging effects after the first pre-exposure to a lower dose. Lower doses of alkylating agents, heat stress, oxidants, radiation, and heavy metals induce an adaptive response. This phenomenon is an evolutionarily well-conserved cellular defense mechanism. The adaptive response is observed in various organisms, from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. Even though the molecular mechanism of adaptive response in prokaryotes has been very well understood, further research is required to understand the molecular mechanism of adaptive response in eukaryotes. This would lead to a better understanding cancer treatment and other disease therapies.
