Multimedia Streaming Services Over the Internet

Alcardo Alex Barakabitze, Andrew Hines · 2022

This chapter presents a comprehensive discussion on HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) solutions over the Internet. It presents the history of Internet-based video streaming followed by the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH). The chapter provides the Server and Network Assisted DASH (SAND) architecture and its implementation in the context of future softwarized networks. For many decades, the biggest growth area in Internet usage has been video streaming. Conventional HTTP web servers and an Adaptive-Bitrate Streaming mechanism are used to enable high-quality video content streaming over the Internet. An adaptation mechanism during a video streaming session at the client decides the video bitrate that has to be requested for each video chunk or segment. The request redirection mechanism can be based either on Domain Name System (DNS) unicast or on a combination of DNS and any cast for assignment of the nearest server to the clients.
