Cyber-physical Attacks and IoT

Mehtab Alam, Ihtiram Raza Khan · 2022

An online cyber-attack can have similar real-world consequences as in the digital world and this is not a new concept. The number of cyber-physical attacks (CPA) that target the physical world is increasing rapidly nowadays. Since the concept of internet of everything has arrived, the number of smart devices connecting to the internet has increased exponentially. With this increase, the “attack surface” has increased as well. A CPA is any cyber-attack or security breach that has direct impact on the physical world. A hacker can hack into the system and gain control of the various internet of things (IoT) devices installed by the users or businesses and carry out malicious activities and even cause damage to properties and even put lives at risk. In this chapter, we will highlight a number of CPA that are happening in the IoT environment and some of the measures to, if not eliminate, reduce them significantly and making them sustainable.
