Purpose: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are used in Internet of Things (IoT) applications such as surveillance and threat detection. A WSN is a collection of wireless sensors, which are able to communicate with one another over an integrated network to accomplish a common task. With this study, the authors aim to analyze and highlight the various protocols required in WSNs. This chapter also covers the specific protocols required by numerous IoT applications.Methodology: A systematic literature survey was performed and has been detailed in this study. The survey covers the protocols used in IoT applications by WSNs and categorizes them into four levels: Communication, MAC, Routing, and Transport Protocols. The authors also highlight research on topics such as the energy efficiency of these protocols and analyze the protocols used in various IoT applications of WSNs.Findings: This research identifies the variety of protocols available for use in WSNs, according to the requirement of the IoT application, as well as the considerations involved when designing these protocols. The various approaches of WSN as well as routing techniques are also discussed.Practical implications: The study identifies the various protocols used in WSNs and elucidates their properties and design considerations. This would be beneficial to develop IoT-based applications using WSNs such as surveillance systems, intrusion detection systems, and medical diagnosis sensors.
