Networks both within and outside the world of science are increasingly called upon to handle very large amounts of data. It is said that we are entering the era of the industrial internet. Previously, telecommunication networks were used for voice traffic from circuit to packet switching network. The circuit-switched networks were connection-oriented. Furthermore, a packet-switched network was evolved where there was no need to make a connection. The packet switching network was idle for all other types of data except voice traffic. Packet-switched networks bind up all flowed data regardless of content, type, or structure – into suitably sized blocks, called packets. The circuits switched were used for voice only and the newer packet was switched for all other data. Recently, Next-Generation Network (NGN) emerged as a promising technology that reduces costs and offers integrated services via a common IP technology backbone. The general idea behind the NGN is ubiquity in which one network transports all information and services (voice, data, and all sorts of media such as video) by encapsulating these into packets. In this study, we comprehensively explored how NGN can be incorporated with the emerging technologies: 5G, cloud, Internet of Things (IoT), edge, and software-defined networking (SDN). The applications of NGN-enabled technologies have been discussed along with possible research challenges and future scope that will help to gain a better understanding of these promising technologies to be used and implemented widely.
