This paper investigates the angle estimation performance of Texas Instruments (TI) millimeter-wave (MMW) radar with various Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) configurations by taking advantage of the super-resolution direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm. TI radar with ultra-high resolution, low power consumption, is widely used in the field of automotive driving. The simulation demonstrates DOA estimation performance for each configuration at various signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) in two scenarios, such as surveillance radar and automotive radar. We mainly analyze the 2-fold super-resolution performance and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of radar achieved by enabling a spatial smoothing method in an automotive radar environment. In both scenarios, the cascade chip outperforms the single-chip estimation performance. The work of this paper is of great significance to practical engineering, especially the application of TI radar in the field of unmanned driving.
