Step-by-Step Guide to Adapting Your Graphic for a Different Purpose
Jen Christiansen · 2022
Not every graphic needs to be built from scratch. Many projects involve creating a variation of a piece that you’ve already developed for a different purpose. For example, journalists often create several versions of a graphic, one optimized for print, and another—or even several—optimized for digital viewing. And scientists may need to adjust a graphic originally built for a journal article to better suit a blog post, slide presentation, or social media post. But don’t despair. Retooling an existing graphic for a new purpose is more efficient than building a new one from the ground up. This chapter walks you through the process—via a step-by-step graphical worksheet—for three primary scenarios; (1) reformatting the graphic for different production specifications, (2) rethinking the graphic for a different setting entirely, and (3) customizing the graphic for a fundamentally different audience.
