There are two emerging technologies which are creating a buzz in the digital world. One is the Internet of Things and the other is blockchain technology. The Internet of Things is the ecosystem where multiple devices are connected and exchange information. In the context of the healthcare industry, we can think of it as internet of medical things where medical equipment is connected to communicate with each other. With blockchain technology, all the transactions between different peers of the network can be recorded in an immutable decentralized ledger. This technology provides a trustless collaborative environment where multiple parties can exchange information. This technology also uses encryption and hashing techniques to maintain privacy and security. Data is very vital in our digital world. If we talk about the medical data of patients then it becomes more worthy than any other data. Medical data of patients can be misused for different unauthorized purposes so a more secure approach is required to maintain privacy and security. In this chapter, we will discuss how these two emerging technologies can be integrated to develop a decentralized access control system to provide privacy and security for the medical data of patients.
