Data Network Technologies
Erkki Koivusalo · 2022
The digital modem technologies provide the physical layer and a part of the link layer functionality to be used for fixed Internet access over a subscriber line. This chapter introduces key protocols used on the link, network, and transport layers of open systems interconnection (OSI) model. Some of these protocols are used over the digital subscriber line connection and others within a local network, the Internet service provider network, or Internet core network. The chapter also describes how protocols of different OSI model layers work together to enable a Web browsing session from a home computer connected to the Internet. Dynamic host configuration protocol is a protocol with which a host that wants to join an Internet protocol (IP) network can automatically fetch the most important network parameters. The length of IPv6 address is 128 bits. Like IPv4 addresses, neither IPv6 addresses are represented in writing using their long binary format.
