This chapter discusses the history and uses of Global Positioning System (GPS). We also described how the GPS infrastructure and three-dimensional trilateration enable position fixing. This chapter also explains how a Geographic Information System represents geographical data and how digital maps use and process that information. Finally, the Advanced Section combines all the pieces to demonstrate how software-based, turn-by-turn navigation systems work.
