Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have encountered a number of problems due to the continuous growth in the number of vehicles, the heterogeneous network environments and changes in network topology. New themes have emerged as a result of the internet of things, including smart homes, healthcare, transport, smart office and industry. The internet of vehicles (IoV) has emerged as a new field of research that integrates the functionalities of ITS with vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). A software-defined network (SDN) is a network structure used in data centers, wide area networks, vehicular ad-hoc networks, named data networks and 5G networks. By segregating the control and data planes, SDN provides flexibility and facilitates the management of the network. SDN can address major issues in vehicular communications through network function virtualization (NFV) and centralized controls. This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of the software-defined internet of vehicles. SDN, NFV, VANET, IoT and IoV are explained, and an overview is provided on the software-defined internet of vehicles, its different functionalities, and the layered architecture that improves the quality of service in vehicular communications.
