The Internet revolution is inevitable as people are constantly creating new and innovative inventions in both hardware and software. The Internet revolution has led to the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), enabling the use of interconnected machines worldwide. However, privacy and security are the most important concerns for IoT. Some of the reasons IoT is controversial are user awareness, inadequate security protocols, or data breaches. Therefore, we need to understand and prevent this privacy and security issue. This paper aims to identify and analyze the applications, problems, and solutions used in Internet of Things research between 2017 and 2022. Twenty-seven IoT studies published between January 2017 and December 2022 were selected for further study based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. This literature review was carried out as a systematic literature review. The analysis of selected main studies shows that current IoT applications focus on six themes and trends: wireless applications, daily necessities, smart home, blockchain, mobile applications, and medical services. There are two main concerns about the IoT applications: security and privacy. Researchers can combine existing algorithms or develop new algorithms to study how IoT systems can protect critical data and maintain user security and privacy. As a result, we conclude that there are many ways to secure IoT. We don’t need to worry about solving existing IoT problems, but we should use the most effective method. Experts will continue to come up with something undoubtedly more complex and reliable than what the world has today.
