Day by day, the use of smart devices by Internet users has been increasing at a rapid pace and has been applied in several places like homes, offices and other environments. The environment with the help of smart devices has not only offered many services to Internet users but also leads Internet users to enter in invulnerable, the untested environment of “Internet of Things” (IoT). With the rapid expansion of IoT, the safety of our embedded devices is at highest risk, which motivated us to do a review of several types of physical layer attacks. Traditionally, the researchers focused on providing security solutions for higher layers like network layer, application layer, etc. Keeping the physical layer at the center point, the paper begins with an overview of IoT, use cases & challenges are presented. However, this paper has presented a discussion on the threats and attacks at the physical layer along with its solutions proposed by the researchers. The main contribution of this paper is a detailed discussion of threat analysis and activity modelling of physical layer attacks. This paper presents several research challenges in embedded security. The paper concludes with the proposed methodology to address research challenges that make the devices much safer and less vulnerable to the attacks.
