Réalité Virtuelle : Définition et Engouement

Virtual reality is a contradictory expression, which is commonly misused by marketing to name a wide range of products having different functionalities. In this article, we focus on the signification of this expression, and the interest raised by the underlying technology. We provide a brief description of virtual reality within the taxonomy of mediated reality, and we show that virtual reality can be compared to a sandbox, in the way it allows experimenting without risk. Finally, we suggest that our desire to escape reality could explain in some way our enthusiasm for virtual reality.
