Abortive Initiatives for a Solution
Henry Cattan · 2022
Of the five wars that were fought between the Arabs and Israel, three of them, namely those of 1948, 1967 and 1982, sought, though without success, to liquidate the Palestine Question. The Palestinian plan for the settlement of the Palestine Question was originally formulated at the UN in 1947 and adopted in the Palestine National Charter of 1964. Resolution 242 was adopted by the Security Council on 22 November 1967 for a ‘just and lasting peace in the Middle East’. Resolution 242 has entirely bypassed and ignored the basic Palestine injustice which is the core of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The US commitment to Israel to veto any change in resolution 242 thwarted the attempt made at the UN in 1982 to amend it in a manner that would make it acceptable to the Palestinians.
