Noise can have a beneficial impact on the nonlinear processes in charge of information processing. In the last years, studies in various areas underlined different mechanisms by which this useful effect of the noise occurs. In this work, we show new mechanisms of improvement by noise in signal processing and in imaging, more specially in arrays of sensors and in coherent imaging systems. We investigate these mechanisms by means of analytical studies, numerical simulations and experimental implementations. We consider threshold and saturating nonlinearities existing in the studied processes, in relation with different signal–noise mixtures. This work can bear significance in many areas such as electronics or optical imaging. We also study the impact of noise on the information processing by neural processes.
